Poverty Simulation

What is a Poverty Simulation?

46.7 million Americans live in poverty every day, which is almost 15% of our population. Even though North Carolina is experiencing economic growth as measured by more jobs and increased productivity, far too many North Carolinians are being left behind. In 2016, more than 1.5 million North Carolinians faced serious barriers in just paying for the basics such as food, rent, and transportation. Poverty, which means living on less than $24,600 a year for a family of four, touches individuals in every part of our state and every walk of life.

It is difficult for those of us who have enough to truly understand the situations that families living in poverty experience every day – the decisions they have to make and the fears and frustrations they feel. Not having enough money to meet basic needs creates barriers to access education, housing, the job market and any other system in the United States.

That is why we are inviting you to walk a mile in the shoes of those facing poverty by participating in a Poverty Simulation.

The Office of Institutional Equity and Inclusion and the NCCCS Student Success Center invites you to join us in a Poverty Simulation on January 15, 2018, from 1:00 PM - 3:30 PM in the Multipurpose. Please arrive at 12:45 PM.
